How to calculate CGPA In Detail

How to calculate CGPA in Detail

This post gives you an in-depth explanation of how to calculate your GPA and CGPA in advance.

Question 1: What is your desired CGPA at the end of your final year?

Let’s say the answer to this question is 4.5. This is a First-Class grade in Covenant University.

Question 2: How many years is your course?

Let’s say 5 years.

Question 3: What is your current level?

Let’s say 200 level, first semester.

Question 4: What is your current CGPA?

Let’s say 3.7

1. Calculate your required total GPA (RTG)

Please note that in one academic year, there are 2 semesters therefore 2 GPA’s. Since you’re doing a 5-year course, you have 10 semesters in total (5 X 2 = 10). Now you have 4.5 as your desired CGPA at the end of your final year. You multiply this by the number of semesters which gives 45 (4.5 X 10), this is your total GPA.

2. Calculate your current total GPA (CTG)

You are in 200 level, 1st semester meaning you have finished 2 semesters in total (100 level 1st semester and then 100 level 2nd semester). Now your CGPA is 3.7; multiply your current CGPA by the number of semesters you’ve done which gives 7.4 (3.7 X 2), this is your current total GPA

3. Calculate the required total residual GPA (RTRG)

Since you have 45 as your RTG and 7.4 as your CTG, your RTRG is gotten by subtracting your CTG from your CTG which is 37.6 (45–7.4 = 37.6)

4. Calculate your minimum required GPA for the rest of your academic stay

Since you’re in 200 level, you have 4 years left and therefore 8 semesters left. Divide 37.6 by 8 which is 4.7 (37.6 / 8 = 4.7). This means that in every semester, your GPA must not be less than 4.7 or you may not graduate with your desired CGPA.
